... one last touchdown

The Mustangs season came to close with a 34-6 loss to Blaine. The game started like our boys were still sleeping. It was 3 and out for the Mustangs forcing a punt. Blaine immediately returned the punt for a TD. On our next possession, a Mustang fumble led to another Blaine touchdown. Oh my!!

A couple of Mustangs made a few plays here and there that seemed to get the team fired up. The team played much better for the remainder of the afternoon. Blaine was definitely the better team, but the Mustangs made plays that made the Bengals afternoon much tougher from there on out. Highlights included a goal line stand that caused a fumble, recovered by the boys in green.

Daniel had a couple of nice throws to Carter for long gainers, we had several series where we moved the ball on the ground and some boys made nice tackles. After a long and difficult season, the final play of the game resulted in a 49 yard touchdown pass from Daniel to Billy, a wonderful way to end the season.

After a couple of tough years of football, the boys will meld together with the 8th graders from the lightweight teams to form 2 ninth grade teams at the high school. It will be fun to get all of the boys together again and start anew.

Huge thanks to Coaches Iwerks, Mattson, Keske, Zastrow and Wodarck for their time with our boys. It can be tough to keep everyone motivated when losing takes over. We appreciate their positive attitudes. THANK YOU!!

.... what can be learned?

Sunday, Oct. 16: Mounds View High School

A sunny but breezy day greeted participants of the Mahtomedi/Mustang tilt for a 1pm kickoff that actually kicked off at 12:54. Your reporter missed the opening kickoff courtesy of the outstanding desserts offered in the press room of the stadium.

The Mustangs had the ball first and quickly got the ball to midfield via a kick return and a 1st down. A run of 9 yards had us at second and 1 just into Zephyr territory. A Mustang penalty moved the ball back, followed by a couple of short runs and a fumble. The team in yellow and blue began mounting their offensive attack that eventually let to a 38-0 loss for the Mustangs.

Total yardage was deceiving: Mahtomedi 73, Mounds View 61. Field position favored the Zephyrs all day. Couple that with interceptions and punt/kick returns and the Mahtomedi offense didn't have to produce many big yardage plays.

The season has certainly been a character test for our kids. How do they respond to adversity? One only hopes they can gain the important lessons that are sitting there, waiting to be learned.

Andover 34, Mustangs 6

.. the night of the onside kicks

My, it was good to see our boys jumping up and down on the sideline when Tommy ran in for an 18 yard touchdown in the first quarter. It tied the game at 6 points apiece. The extra point attempt failed. However just as our dobbers were rising, Andover ran a long kick return back to our 35 yard line, setting up the go ahead(and never look back) touchdown. The final score was Andover 34, Mustangs 6.

We started our offensive drives with great field position as Andover chose to onside kick(kind of) 3 times in a row. Our boys up front did a great job catching or covering the ball. And we did have some good gainers here and there throughout the game- a few double digit yardage runs, a 23 yard pass play and a 70 yard kickoff return by Marshall.

It was a beautiful summer evening in mid October and it looked early like we might have a game. It turned out to be a bigger margin than we had hoped, but some positives were noted both by coaches and the fans. Perseverance is a tough but important lesson to learn. Keep working, Mustangs!!

Welcome to the 8th Grade Mounds View Mustangs!!!

This journey is a marathon, not a sprint!

Remember - it's the little things that are going to make us successful with all 11 guys doing their jobs!

You have to play this game like somebody just hit your mother with a two-by-four.

** Team pictures will be prior to practice on September 29th at 5:15 @ North Oaks. **
