WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS IN GATOR COUNTRY!!!

Wrapping up the season with a big Victory is very rewarding. Stuck in a dogfight, the Gators never gave in, and matched up with brawn to the Golden team from Irondale. Both teams moved the ball across the middle of the field, but couldn’t get past that 20 yard line to complete any drives. There were few mistakes, but more big plays by both teams on defense. The Gators we able to produce some big plays, but nothing broke for TD’s, even when it looked like they might. The players should be very proud of how they came together as a team, and learned many things about playing defense in the last 5 games of this season. Holding teams to very few points, and earning 2 regulation shutouts in the last two playoff games. The coaching staff had a lot of fun coaching these boys to victory this year. We hope that they learned something about football, but more about what it means to be part of a team, counting on your teammates, and them counting on YOU.

Gators win round two, as Ball control keeps Centennial off the field.

Your best defense is sometimes a ball control offense.  Keeping the clock moving, and moving the chains doesn't allow the other opposition to get their foot in the door.  We ran 27 plays in the first half to their 12.  It's good and bad.  Our players on Defense didn't get to play as much, but we dominated ball control and didn't fumble the ball, or self implode with penalties like some other games.  Centennial is a good football team, and they hit hard, but the kids kept battling.  It was good to see.  The second half was a little more even, allowing more players to play on defense, and seeing how hard it is to shut out a football team.  We were proud as coaches to see the kids earn that shutout with a shoestring tackle towards the end of the game.  Nice job Charles.  It will be nice to see if the kids can step up to the plate on Sunday and come through for eachother one more time.

Big Victory in first round game, as team holds it together to finish.

Scoring early made it look like the GATORS were going to run away with a victory.  However, key injuries and Brooklyn Park making some changes lead to a hard fought battle over ball control, and first downs.  It was a good test of wits, as the team held it together through many fumbles and some penalties.  We hope to play a cleaner game on Friday night, and put a victory away sooner than later.  Hope to see everyone there in support of  team GATORS.

Rain soaked jerseys, mud flying around, too bad for a loss.

Coming back after a tough loss.

Coming back to play another game, after a hard loss, can sometimes be a difficult task. I think our kids looked like they put some of that behind them and came to play today. It was nice to see, as they were warned that the Centennial #2 Rams would be a very good team. They showed us a very good defense, not giving up much on the outside, while it took us a while to get cooking on the inside. But as we develop a rhythm, the other team has to try and stop us from all angles, which can be difficult. Our seam route was there a couple of times before we could finally get it in to the Tight End, and complete an easy 2 point play to go ahead 8-0. Working hard on that drive, and eating the time off the clock, was important to the offense to show they could sustain a late game winning drive. As the team continues to grow together, they will find that those around them will make them more comfortable, and will continue to rely on each other more and more.

Mistakes and lack of confidence gets the GATORS!

Sometimes things don’t go as planned. Over thinking a situation as a coach always has you wondering if you did the right thing. It may just be better to stay pat with what got you there and allow the game to progress in a series of checks and balances. As the game unfolded against the Raiders, under the lights, on a perfect night for football, one thing keeps going through my mind,... why try and fix what’s not broke. Live and learn as a coach, but pride yourself with what got you there sometimes. Yes, the Raiders were a good football team, and we will live to fight another night. Coming together with adversity is what we talked about, and what will have to change throughout our short season. After the game we talked about penalties that cost us a Touch Down early, and positive plays taken away later, killing our drives. We will live to fight another day, and hopefully come through stronger as a team, relying on more parts to produce victory.

Gator Victory

Set small goals, become Victorious!

The Gators talked about setting simple, small goals for each play. Doing what you need to do right, to make everything work for the better of the team. So our goal on Saturday was to score on the first play of the game. We let it be known that everyone concentrating on that very first play from scrimmage would produce a TD. And it worked.  It’s funny how things come together when you rely on the pieces around you. The Gators did a nice job of sticking together, and moving the ball throughout the day. While taking advantage of big holes, and execution on the offense, and relying on each other to do their part on defense, the Gators stopped the Centennial team from driving the football well. Keep up the good work, as competition increases over the next few games.

Gators learn to Score!

The Sun is shining bright for fall football! Go Gators!

After dominating the line of scrimmage, and time of possession in the first 2 games, the Gators needed to learn how to put the ball in the end zone. That they did. After a hard week at practice, learning new plays, and listening well, execution of those plays turned into TD’s this week. With various people running the ball, the Gators amassed 327 total yards, and put the ball in the end zone 4 times. Some of the execution of plays was especially impressive because some of the plays had not been run in weeks. Constantly working on new things puts the pressure on the kids to remember what we worked on, and build on that. Logan catching the first passing TD of the year, and both QB’s working well, orchestrating the offense paid big dividends this week. We ran 25 plays on offense, and only gained 0 or lost yards one play. We did have 2 penalties, and one fumble. Both we overcome by proper execution of following plays. The Defense was extremely stiff again, only allowing 1 TD, with no extra point given.  The Gators started the game tackling really well, and taking the game away from Blaine, as Blaine could not sustain any drive until later in the second half. Only then, gaining yards on broken plays stuffed behind the line, but poor tackling and contain angles allowed Blaine to gain some momentum and yards on their one scoring drive. Working on those defensive points will be big in practice this week, as we prepare for our next 2 big games in a row-Saturday, and next Tuesday night under the lights. It was nice to see some more players get in on some tackles this game, as Will, both Charles and Chase, and Andrew are coming into their own on Defense.   When you see those offensive linemen after the game, give them a big hug or head slap, as the holes keep getting bigger and bigger. Thanks to Thomas, Charles, Frankie, Ethan, Ben, Chase, and Will for making most of that offense run smooth. Keep up the good work boys. We are looking forward to Peter and Joe to make a big impact this week, and make the hard work pay off. See you Saturday afternoon.

Can you say, Control the Football?

Starting the season, we wanted to teach the kids the basics of playing football. Concentrating on how to hit, tackle, block, run, and pass. The coaches want the kids to develop new friendships, learn how to rely on one another, and know they can count on those around them to do the right thing. That creates a winning situation in football. We want 11 guys relying on each other to perform at their best. In our second game of the year I think we are seeing proof of our hard work.

Our second game started 30 minutes before we expected it to. We weren’t able to warm up our offense, or review much defense. But we started by hitting, filling the holes on defense, and creating them on offense. Logan going for 42 yards on the first play from scrimmage for our offense was a good sign of things to come. Centennial had a couple of outstanding kids playing the defensive line, and it showed. Ethan, playing center, had his hands full as he tried to help protect our quarterbacks and make holes at the same time. Just when Centennial thought they had our number up the gut, we ran right back up the gut for a long TD with Abe. Keeping the running backs fresh, going left, right, and up the middle, we have moved the ball at will, with a ball control offense. It has been nice to see.

On defense, our coaching staff has concentrated on playing as many players as possible, allowing all the kids a chance to learn various positions. They are all doing a wonderful job of holding the opposition to very few yards, and fewer points. As the season progresses we hope to allow kids to earn our respect at several spots on the field, allowing them to have more experience and be more versatile. Defense is heart.

Keep coming to the games. As the season goes, it should get more exciting. We will hope to open some things up a bit to score more often. We move the ball well, now we need to close the deal. We need to own the red zone and not be denied.

Game 1 Gators vs. Mustangs -DRAFT-

How hot can it get?

The Gators found themselves battling more than the Mustangs Sept 10th. With the scheduling nightmare, and the field being changed more times than I would like to mention, we sat in the hot sun waiting to get on the gridiron too long waiting to do battle. However, once the game ref’s showed up, we moved into action.

Winning the toss, we decided to take the game into our own hands and put the offense on the field first. Methodically moving the down the field with holes we have been practicing to make for weeks, we moved into scoring position, using up most of the 1st quarter. The “O” line deserves so much credit for learning the footwork necessary for running the offense we have implemented. It was exciting to see, with much more to follow. We fumbled the ball 3 times, passed twice, completing both, and ran the ball for positive yards on all but 4 plays. Two of which were fumbled behind the line. It was very good to see to start the season.

Who put the GATOR in our defense? We looked like we were having fun on defense all day. In the heat, the boys performed with pride. Earning a shutout in game one, the boys showed heart by not letting the heat get to them, especially on defense. We need to force more turnovers, and dropped a possible interception, but our tackling was stout, and we gain tackled very well. We were able to substitute consistently because of the dedication to fundamentals for our players throughout pre-season practices. Learning the basics pays off. Blocking, and tackling is where the game is one.

We need to come to play on Sat, Sept 17th, against a 1-0 Centennial #3 team. Winning their first game 24-6, Centennial #3 has shown they can score, and hold as a defense. After this week of preparation, I believe we are ready to perform once again, and put more points on the board in game 2. Go GATORS!!!
