Team Formation

For information regarding your team, you may click first on the appropriate grade level tab on the left, then on your team name.

Mounds View Youth Football fields teams at each grade level 3rd through 8th.

3rd grade teams are formed by MVYFA, with every attempt made to balance teams by player size, and to group teams by school and neighborhood.  Teams will play in the North Metro Junior Football League against teams from St. Anthony and Irondale.  Teams are made up of approximately 15 players, with the format being nine-man football on 60-yard fields. Most games will be played on Saturday afternoons and Monday nights.  Each team will play eight regular season games and the season will culminate in a single elimination playoff tournament ending near the first of November. Players who weigh more than 95 pounds at registration weigh-in will NOT be allowed to carry the ball throughout the entire season.

4th grade teams are formed by draft.  Teams will participate in the NMJFL against teams from Irondale and St. Anthony.  Teams are made up of a minimum of approximately 15 players, with the format being nine-man football on 60-yard fields. Most games will be played on Saturday afternoons and Monday nights.  Each team will play eight regular season games and the season will culminate in a single elimination playoff tournament ending near the first of November. Players who weigh more than 105 pounds at the registration weigh-in will NOT be allowed to carry the ball throughout the entire season.

Mounds View's 5th and 6th grade teams play in the TCNYFL.  This league is made up of teams from ten different communities, stretching from Mounds View to St. Francis.  There were 25 5th and 23  6th grade teams participationg in the 2009 season.

Games are played on 100-yard fields, and teams play eleven-man football with no coaches allowed on the field.  Games are timed, and are basically played by high school rules.

Each team will play a nine-game regular season, followed by a multiple-tiered, single elimination playoff tournament.  The championship games will be held around the end of October, and will likely be held at either Mounds View High School or Irondale High School.

Teams are formed by draft, and each of our teams will have a minimum of approximately 18 - 20 players.

Players who weigh more than 125 pounds in 5th and 135 pounds in 6th at registration will NOT be allowed to carry the ball throughout the entire season.

Mounds View's 7th and 8th Grade(and 7th/8th combined Limited)  teams will participate in the North Suburban Football League.  This league features teams from fourteen communities all across the northern suburbs.  In 2009, there were 28 teams in 7th grade,  27 in 8th grade and 14 Limited Weight teams.

Games are played by high school rules with the exception being the clock.  10-minute, stop time quarters are used.  There are no defensive restricitons or weight limits of any kind in these leagues.

The North Suburban Football League also plays what is called a "mixed weight" league.  There is no longer a minimum or a maximum weight in their open league.

The league offers an option of a "limited weight" league (no players over 130 pounds at the start of the season).   Each year, assuming that the league offers this as an option, Mounds View football will offer this at sign up.  If an adequate number of players express the desire to play in this type of a league, and this can be accomodated without sacrificing the ability to form teams in the open league, Mounds View Youth Football will try to form a team for a limited weight league.  In 2009, Mounds View entered one team in 7th and 8th grades and one 7th and 8th combined in the weight limit league

PLAYOFFS - How do they work?

The following information was current as of the 2009 season...

All teams from the 3-4th grades participate and are seeded according to their records.

All the 5-6th grade teams are broken down into pools (usually 2 or 3) and all will participate on some level of playoff football.

For the Weight Limit division, only the top two teams from each conference qualify.

For 7th Grade Unlimited, the top two teams from the Northern and Central divisions, and the top two teams from each half of the Eastern division qualify.

For 8th Grade Unlimited, the top two teams from each of the three divisions (Northern, Central, and Eastern) qualify.

Playoff Eligibility- Only games within each division or conference count towards standings. Non-conference or "cross-over" games do not count. In the event of a tie, the first tiebreaker is head to head competition, and the second tiebreaker is overall record, including non-conference games.
